Our pajama project provides transition houses with new pajamas for the women and children as they arrive. Many of them arrive at the door with only the clothes on their backs. Also, some houses have a policy requiring the washing of all clothing on arrival. Either way, new pjs from the community offer comfort and caring.
The courage of these women has propelled them to seek help in the facility. We can’t solve their problems but we can contribute in small ways. It can be the smallest things that can help one cope and show that people care.
Each pair of pajamas is lovingly tied by our volunteers with ribbon attaching a poem tag.
Currently the pajamas go to following charities in the Lower Mainland:
- Chimo Community Services in Richmond for Nova Transition House
- Options Community Services in Surrey for Evergreen and Virginia Sam Transition Houses
- W.I.N.G.S. in New Westminster for Monarch Place and Azure House in Delta
- Ishtar Transition Housing Society in Langley for Ishtar and Libra
- Tri-City Transitions in Port Coquitlam for Joy’s Place
- Cythera Transition House Society in Maple Ridge for Cythera Transition House
Why the project began
- This project started in 2009 at the request of house managers. When we consulted with them to prioritize their needs, pajamas came out on top.
- BC has over 90 transition houses plus 2nd stage housing, 3rd stage housing, safe homes and more for victims of domestic violence.
- Each transition house needs up to 200 pairs of pajamas per year.
